Incredible Careers: Alana, Trainee Designer at Omexom UK

Hi Alana, can you finish the following sentence: ‘My business is an incredible company to work for because…’

I am encouraged and mentored to achieve my full potential. Working alongside professionals isn’t just about getting the job done—it’s about learning from each other and supporting one another. It’s like having a built-in support system that helps me become the best version of myself.

Give us an example of a time where you have been supported to achieve your best in your career with us.

I began working for Omexom in 2010 as a Document Controller and due to having AutoCAD

experience in my previous career in the Construction Industry, I moved into the role as an

AutoCAD Technician. Over time, I developed an interest in electrical design and thanks

to the support of my manager through mentoring as well as attending design related courses, I am

currently training to be a Design Engineer.

VINCI Energies UK & RoI is an organisation made up of incredible teams both large and small. Tell us about your incredible team and what it’s like to work with them.

I feel so fortunate to be part of the Engineering Business Unit team and work with a great

group of people who are always there to offer help and support if needed. We work across

two offices and have weekly team meetings to discuss issues, workload, business unit’s

updates and general catch up with the team member we don’t see every day. Everyone

works well together and we enjoy each other’s company both inside and outside of the

office.

At VINCI Energies UK & RoI and our associated businesses, we are ‘transforming our world through the digital and energy revolutions’. Please tell us how you (or your team) are helping us to achieve that goal.

Right now, we’re focused on several projects to strengthen digital protection. These projects rely on fibre optic cables instead of copper ones. This change reduces the risk of magnetic interference, making communication smoother. Plus, data travels faster through fibre optics, which is a big boost for network security.

These upgrade projects have become increasingly important, especially in renewable energy work. Connecting battery storage facilities to wind or solar farms requires clear, consistent communication lines, making these upgrades essential.

Finally, can you tell us in a few words why you are proud to do what you do?

When I joined Omexom, I had no electrical design knowledge. Due to my desire to learn more about electrical design and working alongside engineers, I have progressed and am proud of my new role as a Trainee Design Engineer and hope to learn and grow as an engineer. Also, as someone who cares greatly about the environment, I’m proud to work for a company that is committed to drastically reducing CO2 emissions, water consumption and waste as well as protect natural habitats.
